The no-confidence motion against Speaker Balochistan Assembly Aslam Bhootani was passed by a majority here on Wednesday. In the Assembly of 64 lawmakers, 48 of them cast their votes for the resolution. The resolution was unanimously approved with 47 members endorsing the resolution while one opposed it.

After the resolution, the speaker was immediately removed from his post and the new speaker will be elected after consultation of government parties. The vote count was followed by a ruling by Deputy Speaker Syed Matiullah Agha stating that Bhootani was no longer the speaker of the provincial assembly. The assembly session was postponed for the indefinite period.

Meanwhile, Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani said that a decision about the new speaker and deputy speaker had been made and the assembly session would soon be called in that regard. Talking to the media persons after the assembly session, Raisani said majority in the Balochistan Assembly favoured the motion.

Earlier before the assembly session, he said if the votes were not enough, then more votes would be brought from Kandahar. The CM Balochistan said there was no rift in the coalition government of the province and that the no-trust motion against the Speaker was initiated unanimously.

The motion was moved on December 19 against the Speaker after he had refused to chair any session of the House until the status of the provincial government was not clear following a Supreme Court ruling. Speaker Aslam Bhootani is of the view that according to the Supreme Court orders, the government is unconstitutional and he cannot preside over the session of the assembly. On Monday, he threatened to move the court against voting on the no-trust motion against him, and said the Constitution was violated while presenting the no-confidence resolution.
